The strong, committed and powerful Evaton-based giant: so describes the local man who achieved career success despite the barriers of apartheid. Len Kumalo, a son of Evaton, is a successful photographer. He is currently giving back to his community by assisting the Evaton
Renewal Project (ERP) Media and Communications interns with photography lessons. He has also been identified by the MEC for Housing, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, as an Ambassador of the Evaton Renewal Project.
Speaking to Evaton News, Kumalo said, “Despite poverty, lack of electricity, sanitation and development, Evaton has managed to produce leaders that are well recognised all over the world. I am very proud to have been one of the Ambassadors of Evaton, and to have been born and raised in this community. I must also commend the ERP for affording me the opportunity to teach their media and communications interns”.
“Photography is the best thing that has ever happened to me, although being a photographer was the most dangerous career during the apartheid era. Today, the youth have many opportunities to spread their wings and choose a career of their choice. I would also like to encourage the youth of Evaton to work hard in developing the area, and in participating in all ERP programmes. This will build the future of the community and make the area one of the luckiest townships to be recognised for development,” said Kumalo.
Evaton Ambassador - Protector of Human Rights
She’s a strong leader, she’s internationally well-known, she promotes and protects Human Rights… and she is from Evaton! To commemorate Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on 21st March, Evaton News invited Advocate Pansy Tlakula to write a message for Evaton News. Adv. Tlakula is a writer and is the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and an Ambassador of the Evaton Renewal Project and South Africa. She was born and bred in Evaton and in her daily work at the IEC Adv. Tlakula ensures that people in many countries are able to exercise their most basic and fundamental Human Right – the right to vote!
“Evaton occupies a very special place in the hearts of people who were born and raised there. Amidst poverty, squalor, lack of electricity, sanitation and clean running water during my childhood, Evaton has still managed to produce people who occupy leadership and other important positions in our country and abroad. These people include, Advocate Ishmael Semenya SC, Mr Victor Nosi, Dr Victor Ramathesele, Ambassador Dumisani Khumalo, our Ambassador at the United Nation's Security Council in New York... the list is endless.
Historically Evaton is unique. For a long time, it was one of the few places where African people were allowed to have full title to land ownership during apartheid. It has also contributed to the liberation of our country through a number of protests and other initiatives.
Over a long period we have witnessed the progressive decay of our beloved Evaton. Only those who have a close relationship with Evaton will understand what I mean. We are however very much encouraged by the Evaton Renewal Project. This project excites most of us. We have the responsibility to ensure that we support the project. For it to succeed, it has to be driven by the people of Evaton. Through this project, we hope Evaton will be restored to its glorious days. We must do this for the sake of our children and grandchildren. We owe it to them.”
Message from the Honourable Mr. Assistance Mshudulu, Member of Parliament
“I am very proud to be able to say that I am born and bred in Evaton, especially at this time of enormous progress and development through the Evaton Renewal Project. 2007 and 2008 has seen accelerated delivery and the successes and achievements are now starting to become more and more visible in Evaton.
"Every Member of Parliament has to service a constituency, and my constituency is Evaton. It is our role to ensure that Parliament has oversight over government delivery at the local level. In Evaton we can witness the benefits of every level of government working together with the community to improve the quality of people’s lives. Such collaboration definitely cannot happen without any problems. However, if the development goals are clear, all of us have to work together to facilitate the achievement of those goals.
"Everyone has an important role to play in the Evaton Renewal Project, from the residents of Evaton, to the Evaton community organisations like the Evaton Development Forum, the Emfuleni Councillors and Municipality employees, to the Sedibeng District leadership, to the provincial and national government departments. The commitment and tireless efforts of all these stakeholders over the past few years have now borne fruit for the people of Evaton, and can only continue to improve.
"2008 will be an exciting year of even greater development and achievements. The seeds that have been sown in 2007 to get the Evaton Renewal Project back on track will bear fruit in even greater abundance in the New Year. The sun is rising in Evaton and the future looks bright!”
