According to environmental laws, before any development takes place, in-depth environmental impact assessments need to be conducted and the community needs to be consulted. The ERP together with the Department of Environmental Affairs has held consultation meetings with the community of Evaton. The environmental impact studies of all the development projects are currently taking place.

Waste management is an integral part of the development of any community. The evaton renewal project is promoting a clean living environment for all Evatonians by employing waste management personnel to help clean the Evaton area. Dina Kutoane & Sbongile Majola said they are very happy to be able to work for ERP. They can be able to provide their families.

Dustbin and Waste Collection Project

69 000 dustbins have been earmarked for distribution to the community of Evaton. The first phase will entail the distribution of 6500 dustbins by the end of November 2007. 140 field workers have been employed to undertake the distribution process. The MEC for Housing in Gauteng, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane officially handed over dustbins to residents at the Evaton Community Festival, on 2 October 2007.

Transforming Dustbins into Works of Art!

The distribution of bins by the Department of Housing to every household in Evaton is an important part of the Evaton Renewal Programme. This project is aimed at discouraging illegal dumping and promoting a cleaner more beautiful Evaton.

69 000 dustbins will be distributed in Evaton in total. The first phase of the dustbins distribution will roll out 6 500 bins by the end of November 2007. The second phase starts in January 2008 and will roll out a total of 56 000 bins.

At the Evaton Community festival, MEC, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane officially handed over dustbins to residents of Evaton. In her address she said, “Residents must play a role in cleaning up and beautifying their neighbourhood. The distribution of dustbins shows the department of housing’s commitment to this objective.”

Learners from Itokisetse Primary School, Phahamang Primary School and Phepane Primary School had fun in transforming the green bins into works of art. Under the guidance of four practising artists from Artist Proof Studio in Newton, the children did their bit in beautifying Evaton by painting colourful and creative pictures on the new dustbins. MEC Mokonyane joined in the fun, singing and painting with the excited children. “We love Evaton!” sang the children and the MEC.

Recycling Makes Cents

Illegal dumping in Evaton spreads disease and children suffer the most

Residents of Evaton have been urged by the ERP and the Emfuleni Local Municipality to stop dumping in public places and to use waste for their own benefit instead. The plea came after the ERP realised that many people were still dumping waste in flood lines and public areas, despite several cleaning projects launched by the ERP. Children playing in these areas often suffer the most, as they contract diseases and suffer from vomiting, diarrhea and other ailments as a result.

Old bottles, plastics, paper, boxes, and bricks should be recycled and some money can also be earned by doing so. Rotten vegetables should be put in backyard gardens to create compost. Carcasses and other used disposables must be burned, while daily rubbish must be put in refuse bags to be collected by the municipality. The ERP urged stand owners who don’t have dustbins to register for them at the Wilberforce Community College. It is the community’s responsibility to keep their environment clean, for both good health and a pleasing place to live.

ERP field workers and the local municipality are engaged in an ongoing cleaning campaign that aims to make Evaton a cleaner place. Youcan play a role too, for a cleaner Evaton. Let’s stop the grime and disease by ending illegal dumping. Let’s make Evaton a cleaner and safer place for our children. Think before you dump.
