The technical scope has been completed for the Mafatsane Government and Sport Complex and the building plans have been submitted for approval. Studies have revealed that the site was previously a dumping site. The building will therefore need “piling” or concrete pillars built into the ground to reinforce and stabilise the building foundations.

The Government Precinct is centrally located within Evaton. It is situated between Union Road in the North, Selbourne Road in the South, Frederic/Joubert Street in the West and the southward extension of Buffalo Street to the East. It crosses the most important open space system in Evaton. The area is approximately 905m in length, 920m in width, and 66,7ha in extent.

This diagram compares the Government Precinct with some other, already developed areas. It indicates that the precinct is large enough to accommodate:

  1. the entire Ellis Park sports complex – top right;
  2. Sandton City and Mandela Square shopping complexes – bottom left; and
  3. more than 20 Pretoria CBD street blocks.

Currently the area accommodates an old golf course, club house, soccer field and park, which all are poorly maintained and in need of a serious upgrade, as well as a Post Office, SAPS and some other communal facilities. It is surrounded by residential development on both sides.
