CLLR. MAHOLE MOFOKENG ELECTED AS EXECUTIVE MAYOR OF SEDIBENG

 

At the final Council sitting of the year held at the Vereeniging City Hall on Wednesday, 3 December 2008, Cllr Mahole Mofokeng was elected as the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality.

The Council sitting commenced with the resignations of Cllr Khulu Mbongo and Cllr Katso, both of whom resigned to move into the administration of the Municipality. Emfuleni Council elects a new Executive Mayor

 

The Emfuleni Council elected Mr. Sithole Assistance Mshudulu, in a special council meeting held on 31 July 2008. The Executive Mayor was warmly received by various political parties including the Democratic Alliance and Pan Africanist Congress.

Leaders of the respective parties highlighted challenges that the new mayor would face in his current position and wished him well for the remainder of his term... [ Read more ]

STATEMENT ON THE MURDER OF MR TUTU MOLEFE

 

The murder of Mthuthuzeli Tutu Molefe, the Chairperson of the Evaton Development Forum and the first Deputy President of Santaco, has been widely condemned by the community of Evaton, the MEC for Local Government of Housing and the Premier of Gauteng.

POETRY WINNERS MEET THE MAYOR OF EMFULENI MUNICIPALITY

 

The three winners of the poetry competition, which was hosted by the Evaton Renewal Project, were fortunate to meet the Mayor of Emfuleni, Mr Sithole Assistance Mshudulu, on the 17 March 2009.

Thabo Mthethwa, Busisiwe Phathi, and Adelia Hlalukane were presented with laptops, sponsored by the Department of Housing, as their prizes for winning the competition, and they recited their poems at the official launch of the Mafatsane Thusong Centre... [ Read more ]

IMPLEMENTATION OF PROPERTY RATES

 

On 14th March 2009 a meeting was held at McCamel Church between Emfuleni Municipality, stand owners and their tenants regarding property rates.

COMMUNITY BASED DOT ORGANISATION

 

The popular Sotho phrase ‘Bomme Batshwara Thipa Ka Bohaleng', which means ‘a woman always holds the knife by the sharp point', was proven to be true by a group of Evaton women who started the Direct Observed Treatment for Short Therapy (DOTS) Organisation.

EVATON RENEWAL PROJECT LIGHTS THE WAY WITH SOLAR POWERED STREET LIGHTS

 

The township of Evaton celebrated the installation of solar powered street lights in Adams Road on 17 February 2009, when Executive Mayor of Emfuleni, Cllr Assistance Mshudulu officially handed over a South African solar lighting solution to the community of Evaton.

EVATON GOES GREEN WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR STREET LIGHTING

 

In what is potentially great news for the renewable energy industry and the community of Evaton, the Executive Mayor of Emfuleni, Cllr Assistance Mshudulu will switch on the pilot solar powered lights in Adams Road on Tuesday, 17 February - the first of its kind in the Region.

EVATON CELEBRATES WORLD AIDS DAY

 

The Evaton Development Forum and the Emfuleni Local Municipality educated the youth of Evaton by organising the World Aids Day at Faith Mission church on 1 December 2008. Local based organizations such as the Reach Out Community Project and the Youth Fight Against Aids were part of the campaign.

DYNAMITE IN A SMALL PACKAGE

 

Despite being brought up by a single parent of feeble health, and living under the most adverse conditions, Adelia Hlalukane still manages to be like a bright star shining in a dark room.

The 8 year-old Hlalukane, a Grade 3 pupil at Evaton Primary School, proved to many that dynamite really does come in (very) small packages, when her poem was nominated as one of the best in the “Evaton Renewal Project Women’s Day Poetry Competition”... [ Read more ]

BUDDING POETS SHOW THEIR TALENT

 

Three learners who were short listed in the ERP Women’s Day Poetry Competition were invited to read their poems to the audience at the Thusong Launch on 6 October 2008.

BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION

 

Sibongile Khumalo is the leader of the Evaton-based, women-owned and managed construction company, sub-contracted to build the show houses for the Evaton Renewal Project.

Before she became a successful contractor, Khumalo worked as an office administrator for five years at a big construction company. She admits that starting a company from scratch was no plain sailing.... [ Read more ]

GAUTENG LEGISLATURE VISITS THE EVATON RENEWAL PROJECT

A HOBBY THAT TURNED INTO A BIG BUSINESS

 
A young woman from Evaton proved that some hobbies can be turned into big businesses. Pinky Nkitseng started her Hair Salon at the tender age of 16, under a tree at her parent’s home. She is now a successful business woman in the Evaton area.

Nkitseng who owns “Pinky’s Hair Salon” in Sakkies Shopping Complex, said her business started as a hobby that only serviced her friends and relatives. Today this hobby has turned into a big business that services more than 20 customers a day. [ Read more ]

PLANT A TREE SAVE OUR PLANET

 
The month of September was celebrated in style by Evatonians, together with the Evaton Renewal Project, the Emfuleni Local Municipality and the Department of Water and Forestry, when the launch of National Arbor Week was hosted in the area.

Arbor Week is a national campaign that encourages citizens to plant trees and also take care of their environment. This year’s event was hosted at the Evaton Golf Park in Mafatsane, where dignitaries from various government departments celebrated the day with the theme of: “Plant A Tree, Save Our Planet”. VAAL MOURNS THE DEATH OF REV (DR) McCAMEL

 
The community of Evaton and the entire Vaal region mourns the death of a community leader, development activist and famous icon of Evaton, Rev (Dr) Lord Eldorado McCamel.

Rev McCamel passed away on the 19th September 2008 after suffering from diabetes for the past two years. His death is heart-breaking for the residents of Evaton, religious leaders, politicians, several government departments and many structures he was involved in...

EVATON RENEWAL PROJECT BLITZ THE COMMUNITY WITH INFORMATION

Thousands of Evaton residents were informed about all development projects happening in their communities when the Evaton Renewal Project team visited the area in an outreach blitz campaign.

This happened on a Saturday morning when more than 80 ERP team members drove in a convoy to various areas in and around Evaton distributing ERP pamphlets, brochures and newsletters. The campaign was aimed at interacting and informing the community about all programmes of the ERP.  [ Read more ]

YOUTH UNITE AGAINST RAPE

Rape crimes were seriously condemned by the youth of Evaton when more than 500 young people marched to the Sebokeng police station. The protest was led by the new president of ANC Youth League, Julius Malema.

The youth handed over a memorandum stating their dissatisfaction with the handling of rape cases in the area. Several rapes have been committed in Evaton, but police have not been able to arrest any of the perpetrators. [ Read more ]

EVATON MARCHES TO CONDEMN XENOPHOBIA

Xenophobia attacks which spread around the country recently were condemned in Evaton, when EDF Chairperson, Tutu Molefe, together with local ward councilors led a community march against xenophobia.

The march started in all 14 wards of Evaton and proceeded to Zone 7 Stadium where several dignitaries delivered speeches against xenophobia. EDF Chairperson Tutu Molefe said when he grew up some 50 years ago there were immigrants already living in Evaton and running their daily businesses. [ Read more ]

CONGRATULATIONS! NEW EVATON DEVELOPMENT FORUM ELECTED

 

“Re Hae Jwale, A Re Holeng Mmoho”, meaning “We are home, now let’s grow together” was the theme of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held over three days in Vanderbijlpark in April 2008. During this time 15 new committee members of the Evaton Development Forum (EDF) were officially elected, five serving in the executive committee and ten as additional members.

EVATONIAN WINS COMMUNITY BUILDER OF THE YEAR

 

Maria Manoto (65) from Evaton has once again achieved national recognition for a lifetime of commitment to helping her community . In 1989 she won a Nestle award for the Best Gardener in South Africa. Last year she did it again by winning the Senior Category of the prestigious Community Builder of the Year Award, for her work in the Emthonjeni Multi Purpose Centre in Evaton. [ Read more ]

WE SALUTE A GOLDEN OLDIE OF EVATON

 

Annah Mathato Nkabinde was born in the same year when the township of Evaton was formed, more than a century ago. Just like Evaton, Gogo Nkabinde turned 103 years old this year and is the oldest resident in the area. [ Read more ]

YOUNG PEOPLE RENEWING EVATON

 

Young people are dedicating their time and youthful energy to the vision of a cleaner and greener Evaton. Evaton News caught them in action at the Evaton assembly area, where 462 energetic and determined youth, armed with rakes, shovels and spades, participated in the Evaton cleaning campaign. This campaign is called “Zenzele Muntomusha”. [ Read more ]

CARING FOR THE EVATON ELDERS

Councillor Gqelosha, the Ward 43 Councillor in the Emfuleni Municipality, is very passionate about the plight of elderly people in his Community. He believes that much more can be done to respect, honour and care for the aged in Evaton.

On 27th October 2007, Councillor Gqelosha and the ANC Branch held a groundbreaking meeting of the aged in Evaton. About 800 people attended the whole-day event where many issues affecting old people were debated and discussed. Plans were also agreed on how to address these issues. [ Read more ]

EVATON RENEWAL PROJECT ATTRACTS BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS
2 October 2007

 

300 invited guests from business, government and the community attended a business briefing in Evaton, as part of the Evaton community festival on 2nd October . The MEC of Housing Ms Nomvula Mokonyane briefed the guests on the vision of the Evaton Renewal Project and the progress made to date.

Attendees included Standard Bank, the National Housing Finance Corporation, the Development Bank of South Africa, Aphane Consulting, Grinaker, M &A Architects, the Sedibeng and Emfuleni municipal councillors and leadership as well as the Evaton Members of Parliament.

2500 ATTEND EVATON COMMUNITY FESTIVAL
2 October 2007

 

The Evaton Renewal Community Festival on Tuesday the 2nd October 2007 was hosted by the MEC of Housing, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane and the Evaton Development Forum.

The event aimed at communicating the progress made by the ERP (in full) thus far to the people of Evaton. Plans are underway to upgrade the Mafatsane building into a modern complex that addresses the growing needs of the Evaton community. [ Read more ]

SOIL-TURNING AT MAFATSANE KICKS OFF DEVELOPMENT
2 October 2007

 

The soil turning at the Mafatsane Municipal Offices on 2 October 2007 was a symbolic start to the radical transformation and upgrade that is planned for the site as part of the Evaton Renewal Project.

The Evaton Renewal Project is a project of government aimed at "renewing" or regenerating Evaton, to improve the quality of life of the Evaton community. The priority areas of this project include: the development of infrastructure, such as the resurfacing of roads and building of pavements; the development of the local economy through job creation and Small, Micro and Medium Enterprise (SMME) projects, like grass-cutting and the setting up of vegetable gardens and agriculture projects; and social upliftment through the upgrading of dilapidated houses, providing community halls and municipal offices with better facilities to service the community of Evaton.
